Abstract
Development of a UN Spatial Data Infrastructure for Transport Track: Sustainable Development and Humanitarian Affairs Author(s): Olivier Cottray, Nicolas Chavent Emergencies that require external humanitarian intervention typically occur in countries where reliable information on logistical resources is scarce. In such circumstances, Information Management (IM) and Geographic Information (GI) units within many humanitarian agencies strive to collect, analyse and distribute vital decision-support information. In the context of the wider UN Spatial Data Infrastructure initiative, the UN Joint Logistics Centre was tasked by the UN Geographic Information Working Group with developing a spatial data model for transport and logistics. The project, UNSDI-T, aims to develop a geo-database schema tailored to humanitarian requirements along with a data collection and processing methodology by the end of 2007. The overall goal is to reduce inefficiencies in data collection and processing inherent to the lack of standardized protocols within the humanitarian IM/GI community. The project addresses the following issues towards this objective:
