Abstract
Life-cycle Fiber Management Track: Telecommunications and Location-Based Services Author(s): Christopher Schweitzer, Scott Bowles, Kelly Hall Auburn, IN began delivering fiber-based Internet services in 2005 as they strived to meet the unmet communications needs of the local business community. In June 2006, after completing an extensive feasibility study, community leaders decided to adopt a plan to extend the fiber network to remaining business sectors and offer a newly expanded suite of business class Internet and voice services. Auburn recognized this new fiber infrastructure required sound record management and aimed to implement a system that addressed the full life-cycle of fiber management, from preliminary design through sustained operations. Auburn selected Enghouse Systems' NetWORKS as the GIS-based design and records management platform. Auburn's fiber designers, consulting engineering with Spectrum Engineering Corporation, remotely accessed the City's ArcSDE database to edit and design within the City's production environment. This real-time connectivity to the Auburn GIS allows local staff to constantly review the designer's work and collaboratively create, maintain and analyze related data. As features evolve through the fiber record lifecycle, Auburn staff and leaders can monitor the project's progress via ArcGIS Server websites and reporting tools.
