Author(s): Nohora Trujillo Navarrete

The Colombian Institute of Rural Development intends to achieve the collective building up of processes related territorial matters in order to improve the life standards and the wellbeing of the target populations: country persons, indigenous and afro-Colombian individuals.

This agreed construction has allowed making progress with the support of the GIS, in processes of collective title ownership within the framework of Act 70 of 1993 in the Colombian Pacific Basin. In this way, 148 collective titles corresponding to 12,674,296,95 acres were issued, benefiting thus 60,398 families, protecting the environment, obtaining the ethnic acknowledgement and strengthening the organization. The Afro-Colombian population amounts to 10,500,000 inhabitants accounting for 26% of the entire population which reaches 42,000,000 inhabitants.

This basin corresponds to 8, 7% of the Colombian territory and is characterized by its environmental richness, being declared as zone of "protective forest reserve" by law 2, 1959.
