Abstract
Alaska BIA GIS Start-up Workshop and Library Track: Ecology and Conservation Author(s): Kim Homan The Bureau of Indian Affairs, Alaska Regional Office works with 228 Tribes and many contracted and compacted Tribal Organizations in Alaska. There are nearly 1.5 million acres of restricted free Native Allotments in Alaska. Trust assets in Alaska are primarily managed through self-governance compact and compact agreements by Tribes and Tribal organizations. Tribes and Tribal organizations need a quick and easy way to map and analyze the resources they manage for Native allotees, however, the process for setting up a GIS program is often overwhelming. The goal of the GIS Start-up Workshop is to guide Tribes and Tribal organizations in building GIS programs for the management of natural resources on Trust lands. The GIS Start-up workshop is an easy to use computer interface that will guide users through five modules: hardware, software, data, starter project, and help. In addition, the application will show how to easily download data from the Library DVDs directly to local computers by management region.
