Designing and Managing a FTTH Network
Track: Telecommunications and Location-Based Services
Author(s): Liam Molloy

Around two years ago Reykjavik Energy began a project that would see that all the homes in Reykjavik and ten additional municipalities be connected to Iceland's fiber optic system. The organisation's subsidiary company* is responsible for building an Equal Access network for a total of 59,000 homes before 2012. They are also network service providers for dark fiber connections and IP business connections.

Currently, the strategy is to connect around 9,000 homes per year allowing flexibility to extend the operations area. The scale of the project presents the organisation's geographical information and engineering departments with sizeable challenge with regards to network planning and information management. Reykjavik Energy decided to utilize Telcordia's Network Engineer as the principle planning and data management tool for both the FTTH project and existing backbone connections.
