ArcGIS: Making Intelligent Transportation System Design More Accurate and Efficient
Track: Transportation
Author(s): Paul Hejl, Stephen Daw

A common thread for most Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) programs is to improve roadway efficiency, safety, and mobility using ITS technology to monitor and to manage traffic and roadway operations, detect incidents, and to manage the response to those incidents. Agencies planning and designing new roadways often wrestle with decisions on where to place CCTV cameras so that the field of view is optimized. The North Texas Tollway Authority (NTTA) is using GIS as a tool for efficient and cost effective CCTV camera placement and design. By creating a three dimensional representation of roadway features in GIS, it is now possible to model what the camera will see without leaving the office or before the roadway is built. This is especially beneficial during the schematic or early design phases, creating a more efficient and comprehensive planning and design process.
