Abstract Publishing Surficial Geologic Maps of Delaware Track: Cartography and Map Production Author(s): Lillian Wang The Delaware Geological Survey (DGS) began publishing geologic maps in 1970 when subsurface geologic maps were hand drafted at 1:24,000-scale and printed with U.S. Geological Survey topographic mylar base maps. Since the year 2000, the DGS has moved toward digital map publication. Surficial geology boundaries are heads-up digitized and overlain on Delaware Spatial Data Framework layers (http://datamil.delaware.gov) in ArcGIS to create a 1:100,000-scale statewide surficial geologic map of Delaware. Map elements are exported from ArcMap to Adobe Illustrator where map layout and design work continues. Several technical and cartographic problems have arisen during this process (fonts for geologic symbols, exporting legend patterns, determining detail to display at 1:100,000-scale, etc.), and solutions to these problems will be discussed.
