Managing large volume of as-built engineering records, which change rapidly and continuously due to expansion and revamp projects, and maintaining them up-to-date is s a challenge faced by many oil and gas owner operator companies. An enterprise GIS integrated has the potential to alleviate this problem by eliminating the need to manage traditional engineering drawings and data sheets as they can be generated on the fly. Since geography plays an important role in analysis and decision making process in all phases of petroleum industry from downstream to mid-stream and upstream, an enterprise GIS has the added advantage of enhancing a number of business processes. GIS also serves as a platform for dissemination of current, accurate and consistent engineering data in a secure environment. This paper shares Qatar Petroleum's experience and plans in improving engineering data management and dissemination and enhancing business processes through use of GIS.
