Federal Oil and Gas Accessibility of the United States
Track: Petroleum
Author(s): Richard Watson

The Energy Acts of 2000 and 2005 require the U.S. Department of the Interior to conduct oil and gas inventories of all onshore Federal lands and to determine the extent of any restrictions or impediments to their development. Phase III of this inventory, which now includes the entire United States, was released in 2008 and is available on the Bureau of Land Management's Web site at www.blm.gov/epca. Using ArcGIS, a spatial intersection of oil and gas resources and Federal lands grouped into nine access categories allows quantification of surface acreages and underlying fossil fuel volumes. This report represents the third in a series of efforts to comprehensively integrate, using geospatial technology, oil and gas resources with Federal land accessibility. This presentation will be informative for anyone who has an interest in Federal lands and energy development.
