Building a 3D GIS with SketchUp and 3D Analyst

The City of Tacoma, WA initiated a program in October of 2007 to model signature buildings in its downtown and display them in 3D Analyst and Google Earth. City staff completed a day-long training in SketchUp, a free model-building software, and photo editing tools and techniques. The anticipated outcome of the six-month program is a baseline 3D GIS database for planning and economic development applications. This presentation will cover the process of constructing a 3D GIS using SketchUp and 3D Analyst, challenges encountered, solutions, and best practices.
