Implementing an Integrated GIS and Document Management System
Track: New Technology and System Integration
Author(s): Jeremy Dandron, Bill Campbell

The Bureau of Reclamation's Phoenix Field Office has embarked on a program to implement a fully integrated GIS and Document Management system. Working in conjunction with Farragut Systems, the Phoenix office accesses and manages documents (Word, Excell, TIFF, PDF, etc.) from a Web-based mapping interface. The integrated application allows access from the document management system, essentially allowing the user to locate a document in the document management system and then displaying a map which highlights the feature(s) that it is associated with. In addition, the user can start with the map by selecting map features, and then using that selection set to identify all of the associated documents. This integrated system utilizes Hart's DOC-Locator product in conjunction with Microsoft's Sharepoint Document Management System. This presentation will discuss the system implementation rationale, technological impacts of using the map as a search interface, deployment and development issues, and benefits of the system.
