Managing Custom Applications: A Local Government's Perspective
Track: GIS Organization, Management, and Implementation
Author(s): Christopher Graff

Key to a well thought out, robust custom application is the process of distributing and maintaining it. The City of Auburn, AL has developed and deployed an application called The Applications Directory which acts as a central repository for all of its custom GIS applications. It also provides for an additional level of access security and a means to disseminate updates for the applications in the Directory. The Directory automatically updates client-side code when individual applications are launched. Furthermore, applications within the Directory are organized by user-groups and dependant on user credentials. The Directory will only present users with applications that have been approved for their use. This not only restricts users from sensitive edit applications but publicizes new applications of which a user might not be aware.
