GIS Technology Supporting the Management of the Colombian Maritime Authority
Track: Ocean, Coastal, and Marine Resources

With the purpose of increasing its competitiveness productivity, Colombia has revalued the vision on the oceans and their resources, whose potentialities have not been taken advantage of as a result of its non inclusion in the planning like active part in the national territory. Close to 50 percent of the Colombian territory, corresponds to marine spaces, in addition to its privileged geographical position with two oceans access, its brings strategic development opportunities, reason for that, the national government generated policies to get a sustainable exploitation of this valuable resources. The General Maritime Direction (DIMAR) is the Colombian Maritime Authority, ordered to generate basic and thematic information of the marine territories. At the moment, through GIS techniques, it constructs the GIS SIGDIMAR, to manage the geographic information of the Colombian seas and coasts, showing the technological advance, that DIMAR has acquired in the last years.
