The Strive for a High Quality Road Database
Track: Transportation
Author(s): Thomas Norlin

The Swedish Road Administration has since the early 70-ties been building a National Road Database. In recent years communities and the forest industry have inserted private- and community roads into the database. This has been done in order to create a database suited for both operating the roads as well as transportation planning and ITS. The database is stored in an internal environment that complies with national and international standards and it is also available on the Esri platform as a synchronized geodatabase. The creation of this road database is a very large investment and the quality of the data is of outmost importance. Critical parts of the data quality management are done with ArcGIS using Utility Network Analyst, standard GP-tools and specially developed applications. The relationships between different objects are examined and the thematic accuracy is evaluated through statistical selection where attributes are compared to the real world.
