Assessing the Environmental Sensitivity of Petrol Station Locations across Europe
Track: Petroleum
Author(s): Karl Daines

This study has assessed the environmental sensitivity of petrol filling station locations across Europe, with regard to proximity to groundwater, surface water and ecological receptors, using a GIS-based methodology. The principle aim of this study is to promote a risk-based approach to implementing the EU Groundwater Daughter Directive. In addition, the study aims to provide a tool for both individual oil companies and the oil industry as a whole to identify areas of higher environmental sensitivity; encouraging rational investment in preventative measures where it is most needed.

The results of this work have found that the availability, data definitions, quality and scale of environmental data across Europe is not consistent, limiting the potential to accurately compare data and results across national borders.

The study has identified variation in the distribution of environmental sensitivity at over 85,000 petrol filling station locations across Europe.
