Implementing MPLS: Impacts: Lessons and Prospects
Track: Cadastral and Land Records
Author(s): Ben Niemann

Three decades ago the GIS revolution began with the advent of Harvard's SYMAP and Odyssey and ARC/INFO. These efforts helped foster Multipurpose Land Information Systems (MPLIS), which explicitly incorporated modern cadastral information. (i.e., land parcel-ownership boundaries and attributes)

These MPLIS have resulted in significant impacts including reduction of title insurance fees, improved E911 capacity, and equitable property tax assessment. Importantly, these systems using modern GIS Tools have also help engage citizens as land planners. The presentation will review impacts and lessons learned. It will discuss emerging prospects, which could expedite the implementation of these modern land information systems and facilitate planning.
