An Enterprise Spatial Database Environment - Requirements and Prototypes
Track: System Implementation for GIS
Author(s): Jun Wu, Dana Nibby, John Farley, Chilcote Ray

Demand for GIS applications, spatial analysis services, and GIS data has continued to rise at the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT). NCDOT is about to deploy an Enterprise Spatial Database Environment based on spatial database engine technology to support its broader GIS implementation. The Enterprise Spatial Database Environment will serve spatial databases for the development, testing, QA/QC, and production of various GIS applications and services.

To evaluate the required hardware and network for an enterprise-wide deployment, a few prototypes were built to simulate typical settings of the production environment and to conduct performance testing. The result will be submitted as blueprints for the NCDOT Enterprise Spatial Database Environment. This article describes the requirements, testing tools, methodology, and the findings from performance testing.
