The city of São José do Rio Preto is using the Geographic Information System (GIS) since 2003 in all areas of government. This text describes the whole process of implantation of the Corporate GIS in the city of São José do Rio Preto, it includes the Multipurpose Technical Cadastre in a corporate environment, procedures and routines for updating of the cartographic base, applications of the geoprocessing in corporate environment to the government's several offices, (strategic planning of actions of the government, in environmental management, in the update of the cartographic database on health programs, analysis and management of the environment and natural resources in the planning of public works, among many other activities, the use of the GIS in the elaboration of the Master plan), benefits of the system, the acceptance of users, difficulties and future perspectives.
