Counterinsurgency and Educating the GEOINT Professional
Track: Defense and Intelligence
Author(s): Todd Bacastow

This presentation addresses the need to reconsider the education of the Geospatial Intelligence (GEOINT) professional in light of emerging Counterinsurgency (COIN) doctrine. GEOINT, including the integration of "human terrain," plays a vital role in COIN. The Intelligence Community in general and the GEOINT community specifically have a legacy Cold War technology focus and analytic approach. Geospatial analysis in COIN is more appropriately approached through incidents, patterns, trends, or series. This shift has an important impact on the educational preparation of the GEOINT professional.
