Creating a Routeable-Centerline from a Cartographic-Dataset for Public Safety Applications
Track: EMS/Fire
Author(s): Kate Nedrich, Brian Wooley

The goal of this presentation is to discuss the process to migrate a legacy cartographic street centerline dataset to one capable of routing for use with public safety applications. In recent years, Loudoun County, Virginia has implemented a Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) mapping system in our E911 Center as well as a mobile map (AVL) in the sheriff vehicles and fire apparatus. Loudoun County has been an Esri client since 1985 and the legacy road centerline dataset was used solely for cartographic purposes. As a result, it was necessary to modify the dataset to support the County's routing needs. The presentation emphasizes the technical requirements, data capture methods, and lessons learned so that one may modify an existing centerline dataset to support emergency vehicle routing.
