Synthesizing Historical Ecology Data with a GIS
Track: Ecology and Conservation
Author(s): Shawna Dark

Few projects in geography have focused on the synthesis of historical data (both spatial and non-spatial) in a GIS. However, this type of synthesis can be extremely powerful particularly in application to historical ecology projects that can be used as a template for habitat restoration. The purpose of this presentation is demonstrate the potential power that GIS can provide in synthesizing historical maps and narrative data for mapping historical wetlands using a project focused the San Gabriel River in southern California as an example. This presentation will outline data sources, methodology, and the outcome of using this approach. An emphasis will be placed on the use of geodatabases and confidence ratings in the creation of a useful historical wetland dataset.
