GIS Plays Key Role in Gang Violence Reduction Study
Track: Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice
Author(s): Rhea Voll

The Oxnard Community Action Partnership was formed to coordinate resources to create safe environments for youth and families. GIS played a major role in analyzing multiple datasets to recognize areas most in need of youth violence reduction in the City of Oxnard.

The initial focus was to identify a target neighborhood so that government agencies and community organizations could develop and implement a pilot plan to reduce violence in that neighborhood. Using Esri software we were able to analyze multiple types of violence, crime and socioeconomic data that may be factors contributing to youth violence and target the neighborhood most in need of services.

This project was one of 13 selected from the State of California and included collaboration with multiple agencies, extensive data collection and Spatial Analysis using GIS. Insights from this effort will be shared broadly with other communities in California and throughout the nation.
