Abstract GIS Learning in Indian Country Track: Education Author(s): R. J. Kern The National Geospatial Resource Center (NGRC) provides Esri authorized training to the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) and employees of federally-recognized Tribes. The training program is part of a multi-tiered effort including help desk support, application development, GIS services, and systems administration; these components are geared towards building an enterprise GIS throughout the BIA and eventually Indian Country at-large. Our training focuses less on 'button-pushing' and more on leveraging GIS tools to enable critical thinking and spatial literacy. The resources of the Esri Authorized Training Program (ATP) have been significant to GIS learning at the enterprise organization facing limited budget and resources. Discuss recommendations on how to train users with mixed technical backgrounds, multi-disciplinary interests, and unique learning differences. Hear firsthand how we 'smooth' the steep learning curve associated with GIS learning. Gain insight into the introduction of GIS as a decision tool for new and experienced users. R. J.
