Going Mobile: Effectively Providing Mission-Critical Information to Firefighters
Track: EMS/Fire
Author(s): Todd Brown, Keith Silverman

The first good information firefighters obtain about an incident generally occurs once they arrive on the scene, allowing only seconds for critical risk management, strategic and tactical decisions to be made. For years, fire departments have underused pre-incident planning information typically stored in large binders on the apparatus. Updates to the binders are troublesome and firefighters find the system cumbersome to use en-route to an incident. Going mobile provides an opportunity to increase firefighter effectiveness and safety. This case study will describe the progression of a mobile information management system that uses the power of GIS, from concept stage to initial roll-out. This case study presentation will focus on the valuable information and lessons learned along the way; focusing on the needs assessment, critical system criteria, GIS data needs, system hardware, and roll-out of the system to the firefighters.
