Strategic Implementation of Enterprise GIS to Save Time and Money
Track: Water, Wastewater, and Stormwater
Author(s): Ming Zhao, Geoff Stevens

At Otay Water District, the potential of GIS to achieve major improvements in both cost savings and process efficiency are greatly enhanced by the combination of two major supporting factors. The first is linking the deployment of GIS technology and services to an enterprise level strategic plan. The strategic plan requires that the enterprise embrace the necessary goals and objectives to properly achieve the benefits. The second is the implementation of cross system integration between core business systems using GIS as the foundation. The benefits of GIS are greatly enhanced by the free flow of information across boundaries where the architectures allow implementation to proceed without structural barriers. A variety of GIS applications saving District's money and time will be presented that would not be as effective without the strategic planning or enterprise integration.
