VIC-Natur, SDI for Swedish Authorities Involved in Nature Preservation
Track: Ecology and Conservation
Author(s): Greger Lundback

Since 1999, the Swedish EPA, the National Land Survey and the county administrative boards have co-operated in an effort to support work with protected sites. Through this cooperation, a large amount of information is shared and can easily be accessed by all the involved agencies working with protected sites. The introduction of digital technology makes the storing, updating and dissemination of information much more efficient.

An IT system - VIC Natur - has been developed to support the procedures used to establish new nature reserves and national parks and for land acquisition. These procedures require various kinds of additional information, which also are supplied by VIC Natur. The system also contains the national register of protected areas and a real property register.

VIC Natur is based on the Esri products ArcIMS and ArcSDE, but is currently being ported into the ArcGIS-family (ArcGIS Engine, ArcGIS Server and the Geodatabase).
