Mapping for Ocean Pollution Response and GIS Application
Track: Environmental Management
Author(s): Hye-jin Kim, Moonjin Lee

Geographic Information Systems(GIS) have been making important contributions to oil spill monitoring and management. GIS application using an Environmental Sensitivity Index (ESI), is used by oil spill planners and emergency responders. In this study, we defined ESI classification for Korean coastal environment and study Hazardous and Noxious Substances (HNS) information. And we have constructed spatial database and implemented GIS application for managing and using ESI and HNS information. This application provides ocean pollution responders and planners with the functions for identifying various information and supports their making the decision. ArcInfo has been used in building database and the application has been developed with Visual C++ and MapObjects.
