Track: Parks and Natural Reserves
Author(s): Birgitta Olsson

Natura 2000 is a network of sites with high conservation interest in the EU. The aim is to prevent destruction of natural habitats and to protect animals and plants from extinction.

Sweden has listed some 4,000 Natura 2000 sites, covering around 15 per cent of the country´s area. The sites need to be maintained or restored in order to retain a favourable conservation status. The status has to be reported to EU according to the Habitats Directive.

To be able to monitor these areas the Swedish environmental protection agency performs a "Base inventory". The inventory is done using aerial photo interpretation and detailed field inventories. The result consists of geographical databases describing distribution of natural habitats, frequency of plants etc. Data is stored in central databases using Esri technology. The project is in a final phase and during 2008 focus will be to generated products and reports from the databases.
