Abstract From Mapping of Protected Areas Towards Conservation Strategies Track: Ecology and Conservation Author(s): Sandra Wennberg, Camilla Jönsson The Swedish environmental protection agency has since 2002 mapped all nature reserves and national parks in Sweden with help of satellite images that has become important input to conservation strategies. The thematic raster map is produced with uniform methods over the entire country and describes nature types in each individual object. A major outcome of the maps is statistics of how much of each type there is and how these types are proportionally divided within respective counties or any sub-region. A working model for spatial analysis of digital information concerning areas with high conservation values e.g Red Data Book species (points), habitat area (raster) and quality (polygons) has been developed. The analyses can respond to question of frequency, representatively, and connectivity between habitat patches and species occurrence by a combination of vector and raster analysis in ArcGIS. The results are presented as printed maps, tables or GIS layers.
