Hurdles Encountered while Pursuing an Integrated Enterprise GIS & GPS/AVL
Track: Public Works
Author(s): Kirstin Platt

With the passing of the Homeland Security Act of 2002, Public Works agencies have been formally identified as first responders. This is not a new revelation to Public Works agencies. Public Works departments throughout the country have known all along they must provide immediate support prior to, during and after events. With this formal recognition, advances are being made in numerous technological areas that are directed toward Public Works agencies. One area that is continually developing is resource tracking or GPS/AVL.

In recent years, the City of Newport News, Department of Public Works has researched and tested integrating GPS/AVL technologies with an existing, forward-thinking computerized maintenance management system. This technology has been pursued for a variety of reasons including personnel safety, response time, and increased productivity. This presentation will look at what the Department encountered during its research and how the integration will need to be achieved.
