Overview of the Quinault Indian Nation Native Resource Utilization Model
Track: Ecology and Conservation
Author(s): Breece Robertson, Woody Duncan

In partnership with The Trust for Public Land (TPL), the Quinault Indian Nation undertook a research effort to catalogue and study its properties using TPL's computer

mapping system called Greenprinting, a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) application for better understanding land use. The mapping project was the first step in developing a real estate and finance strategy for creating a sustainable program of land consolidation and conservation for the QIN.

The goal of the project was to develop a framework for a conservation program that preserves the Quinault Nation culture and traditions; protects key natural lands and waters; and supports economically and ecologically sustainable management of the natural resources of the Quinault Reservation.

The TPL project included four steps to developing a conservation and consolidation program:

1. Greenprinting

2. Conservation Funding

3. Real Estate Training

4. Landowner Outreach
