The use of THREDDS catalogs and OPeNDAP servers is widespread in the oceanographic community. These servers manage large amounts of remotely sensed and model data, typically in grid formats such as NetCDF, GRIB, and HDF. Much of these data contain parameters such as sea temperature and elevation, ocean color, and surface currents. The use of GIS tools in ocean management and planning is widespread in NOAA, but access by GIS tools to these gridded datasets has been difficult. To help bridge the gap between the remotely served datasets and the GIS analysis software, a Java-based extension has been built that allows users to connect to THREDDS catalogs and ingest the gridded datasets as ArcGIS 9.2 native grids and features. The tools leverage the NetCDF support provided within ArcGIS 9.2 and the TimeSlider extension for management of temporal data.
