Abstract Using GIS to Get Data to and from Work Crews Track: Public Works Author(s): John McCabe, Julian Ware The City of Oakland Public Works Agency (PWA) had used multiple paper-based data collection and work assignment systems to track maintenance. This resulted in an inordinate amount of time spent on data retrieval for performance measures and claims/lawsuits. PWA initiated a project to improve both data collected FROM the field about resources needed to maintain the City's infrastructure (e.g., time, materials), and also to get data TO the field (e.g., recent work history). Goals include providing better information to crews for performing their jobs, allowing supervisors to better plan work loads, providing management with better and faster tools to calculate performance measures, enhancing customer service through improved web-based tools and better tracking of service requests, and increasing transparency by having up-to-date information and maps available to show the cost and work associated with maintaining assets. The project began in early 2008; this presentation will provide an update on its progress.
