Abstract Capacity Building Workshop on GIS-Based Hazard Risk Information Systems Track: Disaster Management and Emergency Response Author(s): Jessie Huart In a collaborative effort with the NOAA Coastal Services Center (CSC), Esri, and Esri Thailand, the NOAA Pacific Services Center (PSC) delivered a capacity building workshop on GIS-based hazard risk information systems. The training was a part of the U.S. contribution to the Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning System (IOTWS) program, which was implemented in response to the December 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami. The goal of the program is to provide technical assistance in the development of an end-to-end warning system for tsunamis and related coastal hazards. The training and capacity building workshop focused on the application, implementation, and maintenance of Esri ArcIMS software and the recently developed IOTWS Hazard Analysis Template. The objectives were to provide participants with the technical skills to improve use of and access to hazard risk information, as well as demonstrate the utility of using technology to reduce risks and better prepare for coastal hazards.
