Perfect Partnership: Managing Data, Managing 4-H Volunteers in GIS Projects!
Track: State and Local Government
Author(s): Lisa Conroy, Sarah Cofer

Learn ways in which local GIS users can utilize a cadre of 4-H volunteers while developing the future workforce!

For three years, the City of Hillsboro Planning Department has partnered with local Intel 4-H Tech Wizard youth to conduct a street tree inventory of 12,000 Hillsboro trees. City professional GIS users have trained the youth volunteers to manage and edit the data collected, resulting in professional-grade information provided to the City.

Youth will demonstrate their complete data management process, from organizing for quality control, to editing and submitting their final professional-grade information to the City. Professional GIS-users will discuss benefits of working with volunteer 4-H youth.

4-H focuses on teaching youth leadership, citizenship, and life skills. Youth engage in real community projects such as the Street Tree Inventory project to develop key skills as the future GIS workforce.
