Abstract Redevelopment of the World Database on Protected Areas (WDPA) Track: Parks and Natural Reserves Author(s): Craig Mills, Corinna Ravilious, Simon Blyth, Daniel Jackson, Lucy Fish Established in 1981, the World Database on Protected Areas (WDPA) is the only global inventory of protected areas. The WDPA provides regular assessments of biodiversity and habitat protection to the UN and international conventions. The fivefold increase in available protected areas data has led to the need for improvements in the way data are collated, reviewed, updated and reported. Based on the latest ArcGIS Server 9.2 technology, we have built a flexible WDPA system which allows a range of users to access, edit, review and analyse data online whilst providing administrators with desktop applications built into ArcGIS 9.2 to maintain and query the new spatial database structure. The new system will allow data management of global protected areas to be more streamlined and the data more accurate.
