Pennsylvania's RAMLIS ArcInfo Mapping Tool for Mining Impacted Communities
Track: Mining and Geosciences
Author(s): Robert Hughes, Mike Hewitt

EPCAMR worked through a MOU with the Federal Office of Surface Mining to utilize ArcInfo and its extensions to create an enhanced "Reclaimed" Abandoned Mine Land Inventory System (RAMLIS). RAMLIS Tool is available for free distribution to the public. EPCAMR has created a (read only) DVD for anyone who can access the free version of Adobe Acrobat Reader that updates all abandoned mine reclamation projects quarterly throughout PA, provides information on streams, watersheds impacted by abandoned mine drainage, number, types, and locations of funded treatment systems funded with Federal Funds, provides state-wide aerial photos, locations of over 5000 discharges, underground mine pool extents, locations of in-tact barrier pillars, active mining, coal reprocessing and Co-Generation operations state-wide, and data layers consisting of point of contacts for community groups, amongst many other data layers important to the public that are working on prioritizing holistic, watershed-based assessments, reclamation, and remediation projects.
