Abstract Giving Birth during a Pandemic Influenza-Georgia Hospital Service Area Model Track: Health and Human Services Author(s): Mary Brantley The purpose of the project is to develop a mathematical model to help hospitals and other providers of pregnancy and childbirth services to plan for the continuation of these vital services in the face of a Pandemic Influenza. The first step in developing this model is to establish a method for defining realistic hospital service areas. This study focuses on 3 large hospital systems in the metro-Atlanta area. Once the service area was defined and described, then an average usage model was developed using census, hospital, and fertility indicators. A dynamic model was then developed to explore changes in the hospital environments that affect when and where a woman can deliver her baby.
