Abstract Critical GIS Integration Concepts for Sewer System Management Plans Track: Water, Wastewater, and Stormwater Author(s): Andrew Webster, Jeff Kirshberg, Pete Muserelli The California State Water Resources Control Board recently adopted Order No. 2006-0003-DWQ, mandating that publicly owned sanitary sewer collection systems in California develop a Sewer System Management Plan (SSMP), in order to prevent Sanitary Sewer Overflows (SSO). As this order mandates that the SSMP be updated internally every two years and externally every five, the development of a successful SSMP must emphasize the creation and maintenance of easily updateable data and analysis. For the Rancho California Water District (RCWD), a GIS database formed a highly effective framework to store, track and audit SSMP goals. RCWD operates over 75 miles of sewer collection pipes, three lift stations, and over three miles of force mains. By integrating critical components of the SSMP into their GIS database and workflow structure, RCWD not only satisfied the legislated requirements, they also created a reference to serve the District's needs for many years to come.
