Serving Pan-European Satellite Mosaic of Europe

The Joint Research Centre (JRC), a Directorate General from the European Commission has embarked several years ago in the building up of a pan-European satellite mosaic of Europe, IMAGE2000. Once established, the mosaic has been loaded into ArcSDE and served through ArcIMS map services. Since 2007, JRC is working on a revised version of the mosaic based on SPOT and IRS scenes. Considering the new user requirements for an increased dissemination of the mosaic, JRC has investigated the benefits of the classic ArcSDE/ArcGIS Server approach versus the use of the ArcGIS Image Server technology. The paper revises some of the findings in terms of implementation, management and user friendliness and identifies some of the problems encountered.
