City of Las Vegas - Implementing an AJAX Application Engine
Track: Application Development
Author(s): Anthony Willis

The City of Las Vegas (City) is an early adopter of Esri technology, having used ArcInfo since the late 1980s. As the City has grown, so has the demand for GIS information by non-GIS professional staff and the public. With the City staff of GIS professionals not increasing, a new approach to getting this information to the end user was required.

The solution: build and deploy an AJAX engine to deliver GIS information via services. Its foundation: a spatial service oriented architecture combining SDE, ArcIMS and open source web application components into a seamless delivery channel. Then, optimize it to deliver GIS information to users where they need it most and allow them to communicate with the architecture itself. This article summarizes the lessons learned, trials, tribulations and achievements one major city encountered as it moved its GIS to the web.
