Developing a Methodology for a Silviculture Potentiality Map Using GIS
Track: Forestry, Wildlife, and Fisheries Management
Author(s): Talita Oliveira, Giordano Automare, Paulo Soares, Silvio Simoes, George Bernardes

This study searched to identify the most appropriate areas for eucalyptus plantations from the interactions among natural landscape elements. The area of study is Paraiba do Sul basin (southeast of Brazil), in which eucalyptus plantations have begun a great expansion in the last years. The analysis was performed considering geological, pedological and geomorphological attributes. The thematic maps were overlaid and combined in vector mode using spatial analysis tools in ArcGIS® environment. To each landscape feature (rocks and structures, relief, and soil) was applied a scale which corresponds the most (5) suitable or the less (1) suitable for the forest eucalyptus management. The integrated map obtained (Silviculture Potentiality Map) constitutes an important tool for eucalyptus plantation management particularly for the forestry activities in mountainous areas.
