Indianapolis Implements GIS Service-Oriented Architecture Using ArcGIS Server
Track: Application Development
Author(s): Chuck Carufel, Joe LaCombe

This presentation focuses on the Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) implementation at the City of Indianapolis. This implementation was designed to make accessible some key areas of functionality that were used commonly among GIS applications as well as those that may benefit non-GIS applications, systems, and their users across the enterprise. As a result, a series of seven web services built using ArcGIS Server 9.2 were developed to perform these key functions, from geocoding and printing to spatial analysis/selection for data retrieval purposes. Additionally, efforts are currently underway to utilize technologies, such as Windows Workflow and Communication Foundations, to further enhance the scalability and orchestration of these services into business processes through the integration with systems such as permitting and CRM. Topics will include: various web services and their purpose; use of web services in current business processes; and future integration with existing systems through new business process workflows.
