Pottawattamie County, Iowa Web Mapping Decisions and Solutions

The county has had a GIS web presence since 2004 using ArcIMS. With the recent release of ArcGIS Server to the masses the GIS staff at the county has reevaluated its position on providing GIS data and applications via the internet. Now that we have ArcIMS and ArcGIS Server we have more options for our customers. Part of our plan is to maintain our current ArcIMS site while cannibalizing pieces of it to ArcGIS Server. When a new idea surfaces the solution could be ArcIMS, which we believe is still a viable option, ArcGIS Server, or even Google Maps. Using any of these web mapping solutions allows us to better meet the needs of our customers. We would like to both offer our thoughts and exhibit our applications to other GIS providers that are making their own decisions on web mapping technology.
