Integrating Hansen and GIS: Building a Sustainable Solution
Track: Water, Wastewater, and Stormwater
Author(s): Craig Lees, Mike Beardslee

Loudoun Water recently migrated from a legacy ArcInfo system to an ArcGIS/ArcSDE/ArcIMS 9.2 platform. Our Hansen 7-based asset and work management system was also upgraded to a web-based Hansen 8 platform. These shifts in technology have presented unique challenges to the continued delivery of timely and relevant geospatial data to Loudoun Water's diverse group of end users.

Loudoun Water's GIS department has successfully integrated these two systems to accomplish this goal. Loudoun Water has leveraged out-of-the-box ArcGIS and Hansen capabilities, developed a sophisticated systems and database architecture, developed custom ArcGIS attribution and QC tools, and implemented robust workflow processes and business practices, resulting in a tightly integrated GIS/Hansen solution. To meet the varying needs of mobile users, network users, engineers and the public, a multitude of solutions including ArcReader, ArcGIS Server and geodatabase replication have been implemented. Our architecture, tools, workflow, best practices, and lessons learned will be presented.
