Real World Caching Strategies with ArcGIS Server
Track: System Implementation for GIS
Author(s): Michael Kolonay

In July 2007 the Virginia Economic Development Partnership began caching base map layers such as aerial imagery, topo maps, and road centerlines in order to create fast, efficient methods of distributing this data. Tens of millions of files later, their production caches are used in their custom web mapping applications, employed by their own internal users, and served out to external state agencies through Map Services on ArcGIS Server.

This presentation will walk through the steps needed to implement a working cache - from technical considerations on hardware configuration to the most efficient methods of managing the caching process. Along the way successful and unsuccessful practices will be pointed out, detailed statistics of the caching process and the resulting cache will be given, and all the tools you need to implement a working ArcGIS Server cache will be described.
