A Real Approach to GIS Return on Investment
Track: State and Local Government
Author(s): Daniel Feinberg

Many organizations are being asked to justify the benefit of investing in enterprise GIS. Even with a wealth of literature regarding how to develop an ROI business case, many organizations struggle with establishing a meaningful and accurate ROI. Costs are easy to quantify, but most organizations struggle with how to measure or estimate benefits. This presentation will present two approaches to ROI for GIS - a traditional and a customized adaptable ROI approach - and discuss pros and cons to each approach, based on lessons learned applying each approach for large organizations over the past year. The focus of the presentation will be on how to measure benefit, and apply this measurement approach to a traditional and modified ROI process. The presentation will cite lessons learned from two organizations implementing Esri-based enterprise GIS solutions.
