Tracking Construction In Aspen's Resort Community
Track: Architecture, Engineering, and Construction
Author(s): Trisha Nelson

The City of Aspen, population six thousand, currently regulates three-quarters of a billion dollars in construction related permits. Construction impact has become a way of life in Aspen but monitoring construction sites and informing the public can help minimize impacts.

A continually updated construction database has been created that encompasses project locations, descriptions, street closures, parking requirements, contact information, and other details. The database was mapped by joining the permit information to an address point. The table is designed to be shapefile compatible and is displayed on the City of Aspen's ArcIMS website.

Three City Construction Mitigation Officers utilize the map while traveling the City streets assuring construction compliance. Other City departments including Public Works, Parking, and Parks also utilize the map. Additionally, the public can see project locations and obtain information regarding an individual project.
