Abstract Classroom Utilization in 4D Track: Facility Management Author(s): Donald Uchman The University of Michigan is seeking a means to explore and communicate how space and facilities are used on its Ann Arbor campus in order to make the best use of the physical resources that support the University's core mission. Of major concern is the utilization of classroom space. As a case study, facility geometry and attribute data was obtained for a small collection of academic buildings. Data from the Registrar's Office and Space Management Database was combined, reconfigured and joined to the building floor plans. Graphic representations of classroom attribute data was produced in the form of 2D thematic maps, 3D models and using ArcGIS 9.2 animation tools, in 4D - illustrating the utilization of classrooms over time. The case study generated excitement among University administrators and is prompting the development of a Building Interior Space Data Model as a step towards a comprehensive space management tool.
