Geoscience Australia's MapConnect Using ArcIMS, Future Direction: ArcGIS Server
Track: Cartography and Map Production
Author(s): Steven Ackerly

MapConnect is a product of the National Mapping and Information Group inside Geoscience Australia. NMIG provide fundamental spatial data sets to emergency managers, Defence and other government departments.

MapConnect improves our spatial information delivery to the public by allowing users to interactively preview and interrogate the Topographical 250k data via a web interface. The design concept means users do not require any plug-ins or applets.

Functionality of MapConnect includes pan, zoom, identify and search tools. Users will see the areas of spatial data they want and select either tiles or a digital cut of the database to download.

ArcIMS is the backbone of MapConnect, the GUI is desigened using Internet Mapping Framework (Moxi Media). We are currently researching the use of ArcGIS server to enhance the experience and to provide interesting features such as cartographic map GeoPDF's on demand using the full 250k specification symbology and rule sets via PLTS.
